20 km north of Kaup is the temple town of Udupi, established by a 13th centuary vaishnavite, Madhavacharya. Today it forms a center for the madhava-sekt. The temple has eight "maths" ( religious order) in its vicinity each of which take turn in the temple administration. The cuisine of Udupi is one amongst the most delicious in Southern India.
