Tunisia's history is marked by a rich tapestry of civilizations, cultures, and political changes, each leaving an indelible mark on the country's identity. The Roman Empire held sway in Tunisia until around 600 AD, laying the foundation for a period of prosperity and architectural grandeur. Following the Islamic revolution of the Middle Ages, approximately in 647 AD, Tunisia experienced a profound transformation as it became deeply intertwined with Arabic culture. Today, Tunisia stands at a crossroads, rising as a modern democratic society while firmly holding onto its Islamic roots and Arabic heritage.

This photo series of the medinas of Tunis and Sousse captures the essence of Tunisia's historical and cultural richness. These images are not just a glimpse into the past but also a reflection of the vibrant and enduring spirit of the Tunisian people. They tell the story of a nation that has weathered the storms of history and emerged with a unique identity that harmonizes the old with the new.

In my visit to the medinas, I met friendly locals like Abdul and Walid who showed me around and explained the significance of Fatima's hand, which can be seen adorning most of the old house doors. This symbol is named after Fatima Zahra, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, who is revered in Islam for her purity and devotion.  As I showed Walid some of my pictures he said "You cannot capture the beauty of our medinas in Black and White"...I think he made his point there..
